Industry Clusters & Major Employers

The city of Fitchburg began its long history as a concentrated location for manufacturing in North Central Massachusetts with the arrival of a variety of industries in the early 20th century. Being situated along the Nashua River with its ample water supply provided a key locational advantage that attracted many paper manufacturers. That later expanded to include manufacture of a range of products such as bicycles, firearms, and precision cutting tools, just to name a few. In more recent decades, other industries such as medical devices, precision instruments, optics, and even food processing have found Fitchburg to be an advantageous location.
